Types of mattresses

After choosing a suitable trawling through furniture stores, looking for suitable beds and bed frames, many people can feel deflated and fall down at one of the most important aspects of buying a new bed – choosing the right mattress.

There are various types of mattress available for people to purchase, with six main types that have proven to be the most popular over the years; continuous coil mattresses, open coil mattresses, pocket sprung mattresses, memory foam/memory mattresses, pure foam/latex mattresses and mattress ‘toppers’. Each of these mattress types has its own advantages and disadvantages, meaning that there is definitely one that is suited best to each sleeper.

Continuous coil mattresses are the most common mattress due to their low cost. They are made from a single wire loop coils and due to the fact these coils move in unison, movement is very noticeable. This could make it uncomfortable for those who share and mattress and are prone to shifting position frequently in their sleep.

Open coil mattresses are similar to continuous coil mattresses, the difference being that each spring is fixed. This makes them slightly less susceptible to movement.

Pocket sprung mattresses feature springs which have been sewn into every pocket of the mattresses’ fabric; this works to provide better support as there is a move even weight distribution between the springs. These provide better support for those people who prefer to sleep on their side.

Memory foam mattresses have a top layer of ‘viscoelastic’ material; this provides better support and can be useful for aiding the relief of joint pain. These mattresses are usually much pricier than their spring counterparts.

Mattresses ‘toppers’ add an extra layer of padding or memory foam to a mattress, however, it is worth noting that they will add no further support should the mattress they are place on already be sagging.

Pure foam mattresses are primarily used for those who suffer from allergies, such as dust mites.

Choosing a new mattress should be a consideration of what is most suitable given the budget available, though it is always worth paying a little extra if it can be afforded: you can’t put a price on a great night’s sleep.
